School food catering that inspires better eating
Building healthier holiday habits
School holidays should be a time for fun and family. But for many, the summer break can make it harder to access healthy meals. That’s why, through the Government’s Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme, our school food catering company has been helping children and parents to learn new skills in the kitchen and make lasting memories together.
Cooking up confidence
This summer, our Beyond the Chartwells Kitchen workshops reached more than 3,700 children and parents. Hosted across 68 community centres and charities near our partner schools, the sessions used our school food catering practices to make healthy eating simple and enjoyable. Families learned to cook balanced meals, make fruit kebabs and blend delicious smoothies, all while discovering small swaps that can make a big difference at home.
More than just food
The summer HAF programme isn’t only about cooking, but connection. Over 115 days, families also joined in with sports, games and creative sessions run by local charities and community groups. From Active8 Minds in Chichester to Torrington Drive Community Association in Liverpool, these partnerships helped families meet others in their area and feel part of something bigger.
Learning that lasts
As part of our school food catering and education teams, our nutritionists follow the Eatwell Guide, giving parents and children the confidence to make informed food choices every day. By focusing on hands-on learning, we turn nutrition education into something families can enjoy together.
A summer of impact
Nichola McAvoy, Social Value Manager at Chartwells, said:
“The HAF programme is a lifeline for many families during the holidays. This summer we supported over 3,700 people, our biggest outreach yet. With fewer than one in ten young people eating their five-a-day, it’s vital that we bring food education to life in practical ways families can use every day.”
Shared experiences, lasting results
The impact of these sessions reaches far beyond the summer. Families have told us they’re cooking more at home, trying new ingredients, and making healthier choices. As Gary See, CEO at Torrington Drive Community Association, shared:
“The cooking sessions brought families together in such a positive way. Parents left with new ideas and confidence, and children went home proud of what they’d made. It’s not just about food, it’s about learning, confidence, and shared experiences that stick.”
Continuing the journey
We’ve supported HAF projects since 2018, and our commitment keeps growing. During the 2024–2025 academic year, we delivered 145 HAF days, reaching nearly 4,900 people. As a school food catering company that champions positive change, we believe that supporting families beyond term time is just as important as what happens in the school dining hall. By working hand in hand with local communities, we’re helping families turn mealtimes into moments that nourish both body and mind.
